How to Set Up a Blog on Squarespace: Step-by-Step Guide
Here's the blog we're building today: clean layout, custom grid, SEO done, thumbnails that actually click. In the video below, I take you through the whole thing — blank Squarespace site to fully published post — step by step, decision by decision, exactly as I'd do it for my own site.
This one's for you if you've never set up a Squarespace blog before, or if you have one but it still feels like you're guessing at half the settings. By the end you'll have a live blog page, one published post, the right SEO fields filled in, and a layout that looks genuinely professional — not like a default template nobody touched.

Setting up your blog collection
Your blog starts as a new page — specifically, a Collection with a Blog type. From there you're choosing a base layout (grid, side-by-side, masonry, single column, or alternating), and I'd recommend deleting Squarespace's default sample posts before you start so your blog looks clean and cohesive from post one, rather than a mix of placeholder content and your own.
Writing and formatting a post that doesn't read like a wall of text
Once your title's in, the real work is breaking the content up: proper headings, bold or bulleted callouts so key points stand out, and at least one image dropped in partway down so the post doesn't feel like one giant block. If an image comes in too tall for the space, cropping it — rather than leaving it stretching the whole page — keeps the post feeling considered rather than dumped in.
One thing worth flagging: Google does factor AI-generated content into how it ranks pages, so writing your own posts still matters for SEO, not just for quality.
Featured image, excerpt, and publishing
Your post settings control two things readers see before they even click: the featured image, which pulls through as the thumbnail on your blog overview page, and the excerpt, a short teaser that shows alongside it. From there you can publish immediately, or schedule it for a specific day and time — genuinely useful if you batch-write content ahead of time rather than publishing the moment you finish writing, which is how I run mine.
Styling the blog overview page
The overview page — the one listing all your posts — has its own settings separate from individual posts. You can add sections above or below the post grid (categories, an opt-in, whatever earns the space), switch between the different post-layout styles at any point without being locked into your original choice, and adjust image cropping and spacing until the grid feels right. Categories can be linked directly from text in those extra sections, so a reader can jump straight to "Wedding Day Tips" or whatever groupings you've set up.
Honestly, there are a huge number of settings buried in there — worth just clicking around and seeing what each one changes once your first few posts are live.

A beautiful blog with zero readers doesn't do much for your business. Once yours is live, the next job is getting people to actually find it — that's what the video above walks you through.
